These days it seem as though everyone is either riding or driving with ridesharing services such Uber or Lyft. Traditional taxis are quickly becoming a relic of the past. Yet while their convenience cannot be denied, rideshare services present their own set of insurance complications. In accidents involving rideshare drivers one of the first things to consider is that the drivers are not technically employees of the rideshare companies. The good news is that there may be up to one million dollars in available policy limits but this amount doesn't always kick in. Based on the accident circumstances the following policy limits may be available:
When a driver with a passenger to their destination: 1 million policy limits are available.
When a driver has accepted a ride through the rideshare app and is on their way to pick up a passenger: 1 million policy limits are available.
When a driver is using the rideshare app but has not yet accepted a ride: $50,000 per person/ $100,000 per accident.
When a driver is offline and not on the app, the policy limit will depend on the driver's own personal auto policy.
